New Chair for XLVETS
XLVets have announced the appointment of Alnorthumbria Veterinary Group director, John Macfarlane as their new chairman. John succeeds outgoing chairman Don McMillan who held the post for two and a half years .
XLVets is a group of independently owned, progressive veterinary practices that work together to achieve the highest standards of veterinary care. The group was founded in 2005 by a number of Farm Animal Veterinary Practices and has since undergone a period of rapid growth with veterinary practice members now numbering 51 and spanning the length and the breadth of the United Kingdom. XLVets is recognised nationally and internationally as a ‘quality mark’ for veterinary care not only for livestock but also pets and horses.
John was a founder Director of XLVets and has played an active role within the organisation since its inception. He served as a member of the board until 2007 before being re-elected to the board in June this year. He was then elected as chairman by the XLVets board at the end of November.
Commenting on his new position John said:
“I am delighted to be elected as chairman, and wish my predecessor Don McMillan all the best. I have been involved with XLVets since the beginning and I am as passionate about the organisation now as I was in 2005. I wholeheartedly believe that when a group of practices work together we are stronger than the sum of our parts ”.
XLVets supports member practices by focussing on 5 key areas: clinical excellence; people; communication; business processes and growth. The objective is to make these businesses stronger and able to provide their customers with the best in veterinary services and their staff with improving working conditions. The way I view XLVets is that they take many of the jobs that are duplicated in 51 practices across the UK and get one or two individuals or practices to deliver each function more efficiently for the group. Many of our clients will be familiar with XLVets’ Grassroots campaigns and FarmSkills courses. Last year’s BVD Control scheme was a direct result of our involvement with XLVets and the equine and domestic pet divisions of our practice also benefit immensely from interaction with like-minded colleagues from all over the UK (and Southern Ireland – XLVets Ireland). Our program for 2013 promises to be our most exciting yet, with some really big initiatives in the pipeline.
My biggest challenge as chairman will be keeping up with all the opportunities which XLVets provides. It will take up an average of one day a month of my work time, so I’ll still be able to do my clinical and management work for Alnorthumbria Vets. I know it’ll be hard work but I also know it will be great fun.
