Flodden Field’s Tartan Tribute

IMG_6821To mark the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Flodden, a special commemorative tartan has been designed and produced by Gordon Nicolson of Nicolson Kilt Makers in Edinburgh. The design features colours which evoke the battle, and those who fought in it. There is the Tudor Green and White of the English Army and the Golden Yellow and Dark Red of the Scottish Army.

The battle, which was fought on September 9th 1513, saw over 15,000 dead, 10,000 Scots and 5,000 English with King James IVth of Scotland among them. He was the last monarch to die in battle in these islands. The tartan is intended to commemorate all those who gave their lives.

The resulting tartan while representative the brighter heraldic colours of the Tudor period, has been designed to evoke the reflective tone of the commemoration, and the natural colours of the battlefield itself.

Commenting Gordon Nicholson who designed the tartan said: “We wanted to commemorate this important milestone in Scottish History and we hope that those people who have already purchased their ties will wear them on the 9th September. So far we have produced some waist coats and ties, however the tartan ideal for a kilt shawls and rugs.”

The tartan ties, priced at £20 – can be bought direct from the Cornhill Village Shop or from Nicolson Kiltmakers in Edinburgh, or online @ www.nicolsonkiltmakers.co.uk.

Alistair Bowden Project Coordinator of the Flodden 1513 Project is extremely pleased with the design. “This is a subtle tartan bringing together the symbolism of the event and its protagonists. It is a tartan that I am sure many people will be proud to wear, or happy to use in everyday life or for a special occasion.”
